Latest updates to EU sanctions
Below are some updates related to the restrictive measures instituted by the European Union in January 2024 in reference to the acts of violence perpetrated by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, as well as in connection with the geopolitical situation in Syria, Sudan, Ukraine and Tunisia.
Israel
Following Council Decision (CFSP) 2024/385 and Regulation (EU) 2024/386 of 19 January 2024, the European Union established a framework of restrictive measures against those who support, facilitate or enable violent actions by Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
The measure follows the statements of condemnation of the multiple and indiscriminate attacks perpetrated by Hamas throughout the country, issued by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on behalf of the European Union in October 2023.
Those listed under the sanctions regime are subject to an asset freeze. The provision of funds or economic resources, directly or indirectly, to them or for their benefit is prohibited. Additionally, a travel ban to the EU applies to the natural persons listed.
Syria
On 22 January 2024, by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/362, the European Council amended Annex II to Regulation (EU) 36/2012 concerning restrictive measures in view of the situation in Syria, by adding the names of six natural persons and five legal entities to the list of natural and legal persons, entities or bodies subject to restrictive measures, due to their activities in support of the Syrian regime.
